Question.8: Science v/s nature in Frankenstein

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by English author Mary Shelley that tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a grotesque but sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment.

Science vs Nature

Mary Shelley represents the conception of science through the character of Victor Frankenstein.

Mary Shelley declares that, " knowledge will be benefit of mankind. It has ability to the overpower man, if not properly controlled."

Victor Frankenstein is a firstly in love with science. Victor has too much interest in science,  His obsession for alchemy has interfered with the natural flow of nature.

Victor applied his knowledge of natural philosophy and chemistry through creating monster.

Nature plays a vital role in enhancing the impact of the story.

Throughout the novel there is constant conflict between science and nature. Victor's creation was quite unnatural or his creation represents the science or we can say that unnatural.

Monster: creation of Frankenstein

Monster is creation of Frankenstein which represents the science. He throws him into the state of imbalance. And this the cause of destruction of Victor's whole family.

Monster's nature represents the nature
monster learns from nature, not from science that how to servive.

Monster firstly shows the good nature through the helping the De Lacey family.

Through read the hole story we can tell that Victor's loss in the battle between science and nature.

Victor also warns the captain Walton as he too probes dangerously close to discovering the nature's secret.

Conclusion

Frankenstein is notable for its grasp of nature in 17th century, scientific revolution. By conflict between science and nature, Marrey Shelley wants to say that science is not still everything, we can also keep in touch with the nature.
