Question no: 4 Conflict between classicism and romanticism

Question no 4: How Jane Austen has shown the conflict between classicism and romanticism Sense and
Sensibility?




⇒In the novel 'Sense and Sensibility' there are two main protagonists Elinor and Marianne Dashwood,  they exemplify the Neo classical era and the romantic era. Both the characters represents the different ages.




Definitions:-


Classicism -

                      The Classical prevailes in all provinces of thoughts, it is believe in reality, leaving little of validity to emotion.

   Classicism believes that reason is the dominating characteristics of both nature and human.


Romanticism -

                     A mediaeval tale of poem, treating heroic personages or  events written in one of the romance languages.

      Romanticism believes that imagination gives expression to that which mark each person's unique being.


Characteristics:-


⇒ Characteristics of Classicism are belief in reason, civilized, modern, sophisticated, interest in urban society, human nature, love, satire, expression of acceptance, moral truth, realism, beleif in good and evil, religion, philosophy, generic obstruction, impersonal objectivity, public themes, formal correctness, idea of order.


⇒ Characteristics of Romanticism are belief in feelings, imagination, Intuition, Primitive, Medieval, natural modes, rural solitude, aesthetic, spiritual, value of external nature, love for vision, mysteriousness, idea, infinite, myth-making, beauty, truth, faith in progress, belief in man and goodness, individual speculation, revelation, concrete particulars, subjectivity, private themes, individual expressiveness, intensity, curiosity, images, symbols, common language, self-consciousness, romantic Hellenism.


Conflict between classicism and romanticism:-


Classicism was based on the idea that nature and human nature could be understood by reason and thought. 


Classicist believed that nature was, a self-contained machine, like a watch, whose laws of operation could be rationally understood. 


Romanticists viewed nature as mysterious and ever changing. Romantic writes believed that nature is an ever changing living organism, whose laws we will never fully understand. 


 ➡Two main protagonist who represents the Sense and Sensibility:-



Elinor Dashwood: 





Elinor was eldest daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Dashwood.


Elinor represents the classical and  she has reason mind.


Through the character of Elinor Jane Austen represents the sense.


Elinor's character was more practical she has worth sense of handling all the situation.


She was more Wiser than her age, she has strength of take decision.



Elinor has wider strength of understanding and a coolness of judgment by virtue of which she, though only nineteen years, is capable of being her mother's counselor. 


She has the capacity to struggle against her misery and to exert herself.



Marianne Dashwood:-




Marianne Dashwood was the second daughter of Mr and Mrs Dashwood.


She was represents the romanticism, she was very sensitive girl and not worth enough for take a decision.


Her character was impulsive with highly romantic ideas of love and marriage.


She was beloved of Colonel Brandon, she considers him too old for her and falls in love with John Willoughby.


Marianne's abilities were in many respects, quite equal to Elinor. As a sensible girl she was eager in everything.


In the end she was comes to realise that her unleashed emotions almost killed her.




The entire contrast between the characters of Elinor and Marianne may be summed up by saying that, while Elinor embodies sense, Marianne embodies sensibility. Elinor can exercise restraint upon her feelings, she possesses the strength to command her feelings and emotions. Marianne is susceptible to feeling to an excessive degree.


Conclusion:-


We can conclude that both has equal importance in day to day life. We can not live without both in regular life.

In literature  the word monster is used to refer to men who have done horrible things.
